The short answer

Eight of the fourteen 8,000-metre peaks stand in or on the edge of Nepal. Everest is the tallest at 8,848.86 m, and most of the others sit along the northern border or deep inside the Himalayan wall.

Key facts

Everest
8,848.86 m, Nepal and Tibet
Kanchenjunga
8,586 m, Nepal and India
Lhotse
8,516 m, Nepal and Tibet
Makalu
8,485 m, Nepal and Tibet

How it works

  1. Know which ones are visible without trekkingEverest from Nagarkot is a small bump on a very long skyline; Annapurna, Dhaulagiri and Manaslu are bold from Pokhara; Kanchenjunga is visible from the far east.
  2. Pick the range, not the peakMost travellers choose a region (Khumbu, Annapurna, Manaslu, Langtang) rather than a mountain, because the walk and the villages matter as much as the summit.
  3. Leave the climbing question to specialistsSummit attempts need expedition permits and a licensed operator; for walking trips use the Everest region page and the sister site Basecamp Hikes.

Insider tip

Cho Oyu (8,188 m), Dhaulagiri I (8,167 m), Manaslu (8,163 m) and Annapurna I (8,091 m) complete the Nepal list. Dhaulagiri, Manaslu and Annapurna I lie wholly in Nepal.

Avoid this

Quoted heights change by a metre or two between sources, and Everest was re-measured jointly by Nepal and China in 2020. Use the figure with its source.

No. The summit sits on the border between Nepal and Tibet (China). The southern approach and the Khumbu valley are in Nepal; the northern approach is from Tibet.

Which 8,000 m peak is fully in Nepal?

Dhaulagiri I, Manaslu and Annapurna I are entirely in Nepal. The others share a border with Tibet or India.
