The short answer

The Outer Kora is the main circuit, about 52 km, usually over three days, crossing Dolma La at about 5,630 m. The Inner Kora and Charan Sparsh are more specialised and depend on access and conditions.

How it works

  1. Day 1: Darchen to DirapukA gradual walk of about 20 km. The north face of Kailash comes into view near the end, which many pilgrims find moving.
  2. Day 2: Dolma La and ZutulpukThe hardest day, crossing the Dolma La at about 5,630 m and descending steeply. Start early and go slowly.
  3. Day 3: Zutulpuk to DarchenA gentler descent along the valley to the finish, often with a sense of relief and gratitude.

The Outer Kora in practice

The Outer Kora is a circuit of about 52 km, usually walked in three days with overnight stays at simple lodges. The route includes the high Dolma La pass at about 5,630 m. Ponies and porters can be arranged for those who need them.

Weather changes quickly, so carry layers and a rain jacket. Walk slowly and drink often.

Inner Kora and other options

The Inner Kora and Charan Sparsh are shorter and more specialised, and access depends on conditions and rules. Ask your operator what is realistic for your group. For those who cannot walk the full circuit, a partial kora or a drive around the base is sometimes offered.

Insider tip

Most pilgrims do the Outer Kora. The Inner is for people with experience and the right season.

Avoid this

Do not assume ponies or porters will always be available.
