The short answer
The western route crosses from Hilsa in Humla, far north-west Nepal, to Purang (Taklakot) in Tibet. Most travellers reach Simikot by flight from Nepalgunj, then go by helicopter or on foot to Hilsa, cross the border and drive from Purang to Manasarovar and Darchen.
It is the shortest route to Kailash from Nepal but depends on flights and weather. A supported helicopter version, available in the main season, is popular with older pilgrims who want fewer days; the trek version through Humla is for fit adventurers. Allow spare days for weather and be ready for simple lodging.

How the western approach works
The route flies from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, then on to Simikot in Humla, one of the most remote parts of Nepal. From Simikot, travellers reach Hilsa by helicopter or on foot, cross the border to Purang and continue by road to Manasarovar and Darchen.
It can shorten the trip and gives a wilder feel, but it depends heavily on weather, flights and permits. The terrain is remote, with simple lodges and long days.
Who it suits and how to prepare
It suits fit, flexible travellers who accept the possibility of delays. It is less suited to travellers with health concerns, since medical help is far away and the route is high.
Keep buffer days in Nepalgunj and Simikot, pack warm and light, and carry spare medicines. Discuss the plan with your doctor and your operator, and agree a clear emergency plan before you go.
Insider tip
Add a buffer day at Nepalgunj and Simikot.
Avoid this
Do not book a tight onward flight right after the return.
