Is the Everest mountain flight worth it?

By Base Camp Tours, licensed Nepal travel agency (Tourism License 3121/080) · Updated · 2 min read

The short answer

Yes, if you will not trek. About an hour in the air gives you every major peak in the Mahalangur range, with a window seat and a cockpit visit. It is not a substitute for the real thing, but it is the easiest way to see Everest.

How it works

  1. Book earlySeats on the first flights go quickly in October and November.
  2. Check at the deskScenic flights are cancelled if cloud covers the peaks; ask what happens to your ticket.
  3. Bring a cameraUse the window and shoot through the pane; do not use flash.

What you actually see

The flight heads east from Kathmandu along the Himalayan chain. You see Langtang, Gaurishankar, Melungtse, the Khumbu giants and the Everest–Lhotse–Nuptse group, with the Tibetan plateau beyond. Each passenger usually gets a window seat and cockpit time is often offered.

The best views depend on weather and morning clarity. Everest may be partly hidden behind nearer peaks, so ask your guide or the crew to point it out.

Making the flight count

Book the earliest departure. Sit on the side the staff recommend, wear dark clothing to cut window reflections and bring a camera you can use quickly. Keep expectations realistic: it is a brief, beautiful look at the range, not the experience of being among the mountains.

Pair it with a trek or a helicopter tour if you want a closer feel. See scenic flights compared.

Insider tip

Early flights have the most reliable weather, so take the first departure you can.

Avoid this

Do not expect to touch down. This is a scenic flight only; the airstrip landings are Lukla and Syangboche by helicopter.

Related questions

Can I see Everest clearly from the flight?

Usually yes, with a clear morning. Everest can look smaller than the nearer Lhotse and Nuptse, so the crew points it out.

Is the flight suitable for seniors?

Yes. There is no altitude exposure beyond what the cabin pressure provides, and it avoids all trekking.
