How do you get from Kathmandu to the Everest region?

The short answer

You fly. A short mountain flight takes you to Lukla, the small airstrip that opens the Khumbu valley, and in busy seasons many of those flights leave from Manthali in Ramechhap rather than Kathmandu itself.

How it works

  1. Confirm the departure airportIn peak months operators often route Lukla flights from Manthali, about four to five hours by road from Kathmandu. Confirm which airport applies at booking.
  2. Plan the early startDomestic check-in for Lukla flights is usually well before dawn; keep your bag light.
  3. Allow buffer daysA day lost to weather is normal, not unusual. Build one into the plan and treat it as a rest day.

How the Lukla flight really works

Lukla's short, sloping runway is one of the most famous in the world, and flights depend on clear weather at both ends. Morning departures are the norm because cloud builds in the valley as the day warms. Delays of a few hours are common, and cancellations for a day or more happen, especially outside the main seasons.

Baggage allowances on these small aircraft are strict, so pack soft duffel bags, carry valuables in a daypack and keep the weight low. Ask your operator how they handle excess baggage.

Planning around delays

Build at least one spare day into the end of an Everest trip so a delayed flight back to Kathmandu does not make you miss an international departure. If you are short on time, a helicopter return from the mountains is sometimes arranged when the fixed-wing flights are grounded, but it is weather-dependent and carries extra cost.

Keep your insurance and booking details accessible, since changes at short notice are easier with a clear paper trail.

Insider tip

Lukla is a one-way sloping runway cut into a mountainside. Flights run in the morning when the air is calm, and weather can stop them for a day or two at a time.

Avoid this

Do not book your international departure the day after your Lukla return. Leave at least one buffer day, preferably two.

Related questions

How heavy can my luggage be on the Lukla flight?

Weight limits are strict and low. Carry only what you need and ask your operator for the current allowance.

What if my flight is cancelled?

A rebooked seat is the usual fix; a helicopter is the alternative when seats are scarce. Ask about the cost before you rely on it.
