What should I pack for each season in Nepal?

The short answer

Spring (March to May): light layers, sun protection, a rain jacket and a warm layer for high places; rhododendron trails can be warm by day and cold at night. Monsoon (June to September): waterproof jacket, quick-dry clothes, sandals, a dry bag, insect repellent and leech socks for low forest trails. Autumn (October to November): clear sunny days and cold nights, so layers plus a down jacket for trek evenings. Winter (December to February): a proper down jacket, thermal base layers, hat, gloves and warm sleeping bag for high areas, though the Terai stays mild.

For every season carry sun cream, a refillable bottle and a small first-aid kit. If you travel across regions, pack for the coldest place on your route.

Why season changes the bag

Nepal has distinct seasons: a dry cool winter, a warming spring, a wet monsoon and a clear autumn. Each affects clothing, footwear and what you carry for rain, sun or cold. Altitude adds its own pattern on top of the season.

Check the typical conditions for your region and month rather than the national average. Kathmandu, the Terai and a high pass can feel like three different countries on the same day.

Packing smart

Pack in layers and favour items that dry quickly. A dry bag or waterproof liner protects clothes and electronics from rain. In the monsoon, add insect repellent and spare socks; in winter, add a warm sleeping layer and extra gloves.

If you are unsure, ask your operator for a gear list for your dates. Many items can be rented or bought in Kathmandu, so you need not carry everything from home.

Insider tip

Pack for your coldest night, not your warmest day.

Avoid this

Do not forget insect repellent in the Terai and monsoon.
