The short answer
For cities and temples, wear modest, comfortable clothes: shoulders and knees covered, loose trousers or long skirts, light shirts, and shoes that slip off easily. Layers are better than a single heavy coat because mornings and evenings are cool and midday can be hot. Women often carry a light scarf for temple visits.
For treks, wear moisture-wicking base layers, a fleece, a down jacket for evenings, a waterproof shell, trekking trousers, good broken-in boots and wool or synthetic socks. Avoid cotton as it stays wet and cold.

Dressing for different places
Kathmandu and other cities are casual, but temples, monasteries and villages favour modest clothing. Covered shoulders and knees are respectful and also protect you from sun and mosquitoes. Loose, breathable fabrics are comfortable in heat.
In the hills, temperatures drop quickly after sunset. Thin layers you can add and remove work better than a single heavy jacket. A light waterproof shell is useful in almost every season.
Footwear and fabrics
Slip-on shoes or sandals are handy for temples and homes where shoes come off. For walking, wear closed shoes with good grip. On treks, choose broken-in boots and wool or synthetic socks rather than cotton.
Cotton stays wet and cold on trek, so base layers of wool or synthetic fabric are safer. Pack a warm hat and gloves if you will go high, even outside winter.
Insider tip
Dress modestly even on hot days; it shows respect and keeps the sun off.
Avoid this
Do not wear revealing clothes in temples or villages.
