What should I carry in my daypack while trekking?

By Base Camp Tours, licensed Nepal travel agency (Tourism License 3121/080) · Updated · 2 min read

The short answer

On trek your daypack holds what you need during the day: water or a hydration system, snacks, a rain shell, a warm layer, sun cream, lip balm, sunglasses, a hat, gloves, headlamp, a small first-aid kit, personal medicines, tissues, a camera or phone and a power bank. Your porter carries the rest, so you will not have access to it until camp.

Pack the daypack so frequently used items sit on top. Use a rain cover or dry bag liner and keep documents in a waterproof pouch.

How it works

  4. Weigh the bagLight is better.
  5. Keep medicines at handNot in the main bag.

What belongs in the daypack

On a trek your main bag usually goes ahead with a porter or animal, and may not reach you until the evening. Your daypack must hold everything you need from breakfast to arrival: water, snacks, a rain shell, a warm layer, sun protection, a headlamp, basic first aid and your personal medicines.

Pack by how often you reach for things. Snacks, lip balm and sun cream go where you can grab them without taking the bag off. Spare layers and the first-aid kit sit lower.

Keeping the load sensible

Weigh the bag before you leave and try carrying it on a long hill walk at home. A heavy pack tires you faster at altitude and can change how you walk. Most people find it easiest to keep a daypack light and let the porter carry the rest.

Check the weather each morning with your guide and adjust. A cold, windy pass needs extra warm layers, while a lower, warmer day may need more water and sun cover.

Insider tip

Carry more water and snacks than you think you need on the high days.

Avoid this

Do not rely on your porter for items you may need at midday.
