- Check in for the first activityLodges serve lunch on arrival, with a first activity around 3 pm.
The road in practice
The highway follows the Trishuli and Narayani river valleys. Expect slow stretches near towns, roadworks, and a lunch stop. A private car lets you break the journey at a viewpoint or a riverside restaurant. Tourist buses run on a fixed schedule from Kathmandu to Sauraha and are cheaper.
Fly to Bharatpur only if time is very short, and allow for weather delays. The final 30 to 45 minutes to Sauraha is by car or lodge pickup.
Arrival tips
Tell your lodge your arrival time so they can arrange the first activity. Carry a small day bag, water and insect repellent. Keep valuables in the lodge safe and bring cash for small purchases, as ATMs in Sauraha can be busy.
Insider tip
The highway out of Kathmandu is busy at dawn. Leave at first light and arrive for lunch.
Avoid this
Do not plan a safari the same afternoon you arrive after a long drive unless you are sure of the timing.
