Should I go from India to Nepal by bus, train or flight?

The short answer

There is no direct train into the Nepali hills, so a rail journey means a train to a border town followed by a bus or car. Long-distance buses run from Indian cities and border towns to Kathmandu and Pokhara, and flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and other cities reach Kathmandu in a few hours. Each mode trades time, cost and comfort.

Bus is the lowest cost and has the fewest changes but takes the longest. Train plus car is more comfortable for families and seniors. Flight is fastest. Whichever you choose, plan for the border crossing as a separate step and avoid tight connections.
