The short answer
Tilaurakot is identified by many archaeologists as the capital of the ancient Shakya kingdom of Kapilavastu, where Prince Siddhartha is said to have spent his early life. It lies west of Lumbini near Taulihawa. Excavations have revealed fortifications, gateways, a palace area and stupa remains, and a small museum shows finds.
The site rewards a slow walk with a guide who can describe what the mounds once were. Records of early Chinese pilgrims describe Kapilavastu in ruins, which helps explain why the remains look modest today. Wear a hat and take water.
