The short answer
Indian citizens need valid photo ID and no visa. Other nationalities need a Nepal visa, which can be bought at major land crossings, plus a valid passport and, where required, an Indian exit stamp or visa. Always check before travelling because rules and fees change.

Indian citizens and everyone else
Indian citizens generally need valid photo ID but no visa. Other nationalities usually need a Nepal visa, which is available at major land crossings, along with a valid passport and, where required, the correct Indian exit permission. Always check the latest rules for your nationality.
Carry printed and digital copies of your documents, plus passport photos and your hotel or tour confirmation. Keep the original documents in a safe pouch and show only what is asked for.
At the counter
At the border, you complete the exit formalities on the Indian side and then the entry formalities on the Nepal side. Fill in forms neatly, pay any fee in the form accepted, and keep every slip and receipt until you leave Nepal.
If anything is unclear, ask politely at the help desk or contact your operator. Do not hand your passport to unofficial helpers, and avoid crossing after dark.
Insider tip
Carry passport photos and printed confirmations as a backup.
Avoid this
Do not cross without exit stamps if you have been in India.
