The short answer
Most routes start with a drive from Pokhara of one to four hours, to places such as Nayapul, Phedi or Besisahar. Jeep, private car and local bus all work; your choice depends on budget and comfort.
Key facts
- Nayapul
- About 1.5 hours from Pokhara
- Phedi
- Short drive, Dhampus route
- Besisahar
- Circuit start, several hours
- Jeep
- Needed for rough roads
The main trailheads
Nayapul, about an hour and a half from Pokhara, is the start for Poon Hill, Ghandruk and Annapurna Base Camp. Phedi is a short drive for the Dhampus route, and Besisahar is the traditional start of the Annapurna Circuit, several hours away.
For Jomsom and Mustang, you can fly from Pokhara or drive on rough roads. Check the current road conditions, because they change with the season and landslides.
Choosing your transport
A private car is the most comfortable and flexible, a jeep is useful on rough roads, and local buses are the cheapest but slow and crowded. Start early, carry water and snacks, and allow extra time in the monsoon.
Roads now reach further up many valleys, so ask your operator how much of the trek is on road and where the footpaths still begin. Keep your documents and permits within reach for checkpoints.
Insider tip
Roads are being extended every year, so the first day of a trek can now be a drive. Ask how much of the trail is road before you commit.
Avoid this
Do not rely on public buses on tight schedules. Delays on mountain roads are normal.
