Annapurna Region · Choosing

Should a first-timer choose Annapurna or Everest?

The short answer

Annapurna for most people. You can reach the foothills by road from Pokhara, get mountain views within hours and choose anything from a three-hour walk to a full circuit. Everest wins only if the name is the whole point and you can afford the flight risk.

How the two experiences differ

Annapurna starts from the lakeside town of Pokhara, where a short drive puts you in the foothills with big views by the first afternoon. Teahouses are frequent, the landscape changes from rice terraces to rhododendron forest, and you can pick a walk of a few hours or a full circuit of two weeks.

Everest is a journey into the high Khumbu: a flight to Lukla, then days on foot above 3,000 m to reach the base of the world's highest mountain. The scenery is on a grander, harsher scale, the altitude gain is steady and the flights add schedule risk.

Which one fits you

Choose Annapurna if you want flexibility, easy access and a gentler first experience, or if your time is short. A few days in the foothills tell you whether you enjoy trekking before you commit to something harder.

Choose Everest if the name and the high-altitude landscape are the goal, and you have time, fitness and tolerance for weather delays. Many travellers do Annapurna first and Everest on a later trip, when they know how their body handles height.

Insider tip

Many travellers do both over two trips: Annapurna first for confidence, Everest later when they know how their body handles altitude.

Avoid this

Do not pick by Instagram image alone. The cloud, flights and altitude profile are what decide whether the trip is a pleasure.
