How does climate change from the Terai to the Himalaya?

By Base Camp Tours, licensed Nepal travel agency (Tourism License 3121/080) · Updated · 1 min read

The short answer

Temperature drops by roughly six degrees for every thousand metres you climb, so a hot Terai afternoon can become freezing at a high pass in the same day of travel. Most rain falls in the monsoon months between June and September, with the Pokhara area among the wettest and Mustang among the driest.

Plan clothes by altitude and season, not by the date alone. Winter brings cold clear days and some rain in the western hills, and spring and autumn are the best seasons for views. Always carry a warm layer and rain protection for mountain trips.
