How do Nepal's mountain regions compare for visitors who are not trekking?

By Base Camp Tours, licensed Nepal travel agency (Tourism License 3121/080) · Updated · 2 min read

The short answer

Annapurna is the easiest to enjoy from Pokhara, Everest needs a flight or days of walking, Langtang is close to Kathmandu but needs a trek, and Mustang is dry and high.

Each range suits a different kind of visitor. Choose by how much time and effort you want to spend, not by the fame of the peak.

How it works

  1. Decide how much effort you wantChoose between viewpoints, a short walk or a multi-day trek.
  2. Pick a rangeAnnapurna for ease, Everest for fame, Langtang for closeness, Mustang for landscape.
  3. Check the seasonAutumn and spring give the clearest views, and Mustang is drier in monsoon.
  4. Plan accessConfirm the flights, roads and permits for the range you choose.

How each range feels

The Annapurna range rises directly behind Pokhara, so you can see Machhapuchhre and Annapurna from a hotel balcony or a short hill walk. It is the easiest range for travellers who are not trekking.

Everest sits in the Khumbu region, reached by a flight to Lukla and several days on foot. Langtang lies north of Kathmandu, close in distance but reached by a long road and a trek. Mustang is a dry, high valley beyond the Annapurnas with a very different, desert-like look.

Choosing without trekking

If you do not want to trek, use viewpoints: Sarangkot and Nagarkot give mountain panoramas at sunrise, and a mountain flight shows Everest in an hour from Kathmandu. A short drive or flight to Jomsom opens Mustang for pilgrimage and landscapes.

If you do want to walk, start with a short trek in the Annapurna foothills or Langtang. For serious treks, see our sister business Basecamp Hikes, which covers them in detail.
