The short answer
The Swayambhunath zone centres on the hilltop stupa with its painted eyes, golden spire and ring of shrines, chaityas and monasteries. It is one of the oldest and most sacred Buddhist sites in the valley, and Hindus also worship here, which is part of its charm.
Plan about two hours. Climb the main east staircase for the classic approach, or take the road to the west entrance. Monkeys roam the site, so keep food hidden, and visit around late afternoon for the best light.
