The short answer
Nepal has nine Ramsar wetlands, which are internationally recognised for their ecological value. In the lowlands they include Koshi Tappu, Beeshazari, Jagdishpur Reservoir and Ghodaghodi. In the mountains they include Gokyo, Phoksundo, Rara and Gosaikunda, and in the mid-hills Mai Pokhari.
For travellers, these lakes mean good birdwatching, scenic walks and some of Nepal's most beautiful high-altitude water. Visit the high ones in the dry season and the low ones in winter for migratory birds.
