Which is better: Boudhanath or Swayambhunath?

By Base Camp Tours, licensed Nepal travel agency (Tourism License 3121/080) · Updated · 1 min read

The short answer

Go to both if you can. Boudhanath is the larger stupa and the centre of Tibetan Buddhist life in Kathmandu, while Swayambhunath is on a hill with a view and monkeys. Boudha feels like a village; Swayambhu feels like a viewpoint.

Key facts

Boudhanath
Largest stupa, kora walk
Swayambhunath
Hilltop, panoramic views
Best light
Boudha at dusk, Swayambhu at sunset
Time
1.5 to 2 hours each

Insider tip

Walk the kora clockwise at Boudhanath and spin the prayer wheels with your right hand. It is the best way to feel the place.

Avoid this

Do not feed the monkeys at Swayambhunath. They can bite, and snacks encourage them.
