The short answer

Walk the three main squares, watch potters shape clay in the open at Pottery Square, and try juju dhau, the creamy local curd. Then wander the lanes with no destination.

How it works

  1. Taumadhi ToleNyatapola Temple has five roofs and stone guardians that grow stronger as you climb. Cafes opposite give you a seat for the square.
  2. Dattatreya Square and the peacock windowA carved wooden window from the 15th century that shops sell copies of everywhere in the valley. See the original here.
  3. Pottery SquareClay is dried on the ground and thrown by hand in the open. Many potters sell directly from their yard.
  4. Juju dhauThe "king of curds" is served in a clay bowl and tastes slightly sweet and creamy. Try it before you leave.

Insider tip

The best views are not the famous ones. Sit on a temple plinth in Taumadhi and just watch the square work.

Avoid this

Do not forget the entry fee for foreign visitors, which changes; check the current amount before you go.
