Is Nepal safe for tourists?

By Base Camp Tours, licensed Nepal travel agency (Tourism License 3121/080) · Updated · 3 min read

The short answer

Generally yes. Most visitors have trouble-free trips, and Nepal has long been one of South Asia's more relaxed countries for travellers. The risks that actually matter are everyday ones: traffic, altitude, weather and the odd bout of petty theft in crowded places. Violent crime against visitors is uncommon.

Safety here is mostly about planning. Choose a licensed operator, travel in the right season, build spare days into your plan, and keep your insurance and passport copies where you can reach them. Those four habits remove most of what can go wrong.

How it works

  1. Check official travel adviceRead your own government's current advice for Nepal a few weeks before you fly, and again just before departure.
  2. Buy suitable insuranceMake sure it covers medical care, emergency evacuation and the altitude of your route.
  3. Choose a licensed operatorAsk for the licence number, written inclusions and an emergency contact for the whole trip.
  4. Watch season and weatherPlan flights and treks for the clearer months and keep a spare day around mountain flights.
  5. Keep your documents safeCarry copies of your passport and insurance, with the originals in a hotel safe when you can.

Where the real risks are

Road travel is the biggest everyday risk. Hill roads are narrow and winding, and heavy rain can cause landslides in the monsoon, so a careful driver and a vehicle suited to the route matter more than a cheap fare. Avoid long night drives, and ask your operator how they choose drivers and vehicles.

In the mountains, altitude and weather are the main concerns. Most trekking problems start with going up too fast or pushing on when unwell. Walk slowly, drink plenty of water, and tell your guide early about headaches, nausea or breathlessness. Flights to mountain airstrips can be delayed by cloud, so keep spare days and do not plan a tight connection afterwards.

Everyday care in cities and towns

In Kathmandu and Pokhara, keep your bag zipped and in front of you in crowded lanes and markets, use a hotel safe for spare cash and your passport, and carry a copy of your documents. Use the hotel or a pre-arranged driver for late-evening transport, and walk in busy, lit streets after dark.

Politeness goes a long way. A calm voice and a smile solve most misunderstandings. If you need help, hotels and operators are the first call, and the Tourist Police have a unit that helps visitors with problems. Check your country's official travel advice before you fly, because conditions can change.

Insider tip

Related questions

Is it safe for solo women?

Many women travel alone in Nepal and enjoy it. Dress modestly, use pre-arranged transport at night, choose well-reviewed hotels, and take a licensed guide on treks. See the solo women answer for more.

Is tap water safe?

No. Use bottled, boiled or purified water for drinking and brushing teeth, and avoid ice from unknown sources.

Is it safe to trek without a guide?

Some routes allow independent trekking, but a licensed guide adds route knowledge, help with altitude problems and support in an emergency. Ask your operator which option suits your route and experience.

What should I do in an emergency?

Call your hotel or operator first, then your insurer. Keep their numbers saved on your phone and written on paper.
