Why is Mansarovar spelled so many ways?

The short answer

Mansarovar, Manasarovar, Manasarovara, Manasa Sarovaram, Maan Sarovar and Manasarowar are all spellings of the sacred lake near Mount Kailash in Tibet. The mountain is also written Kailas, Kailasa or Kang Rinpoche, its Tibetan name. All point to the same pilgrimage region in Tibet, in the Ngari area.

South Indian languages often add endings such as -am or -a, which explains Sarovaram and Sarovara. The yatra itself is one journey: Kathmandu or the Indian side, Tibet, the lake and the circuit of the mountain. Use any spelling in the guide search and you should reach the Kailash chapter.
