What are the villages of the Muktinath valley?

By Base Camp Tours, licensed Nepal travel agency (Tourism License 3121/080) · Updated · 2 min read

The short answer

The valley around Muktinath is a cluster of old Tibetan-style settlements. Local sources name seven historic villages, including Jharkot, Purang, Putak, Jhong, Chhyokhar and Khinga. Ranipauwa is a newer settlement, founded to host pilgrims, and it is where most visitors stay today.

Jharkot has a notable old monastery and a clinic, and a short walk between Ranipauwa and Jharkot gives a feel for the valley without a long hike. Jhong and Putak are quieter and reached on foot or by a rough road. These villages are in the rain shadow, so they are dry and windy, with mud-brick houses, barley fields and prayer flags.

A dry valley of old villages

The valley is a high desert of barley fields, stone walls and flat-roofed houses, and the villages follow Tibetan traditions in architecture and culture. Prayer flags, mani walls and chortens line the paths, and monasteries stand on the ridges.

Ranipauwa serves pilgrims, while older settlements like Jharkot preserve a quieter, more traditional feel. Walking between them reveals the rhythm of village life.

Walking and visiting respectfully

A morning walk from Ranipauwa to Jharkot is short and gives wide views over the valley. Keep to paths, do not walk through fields, and ask before entering monasteries or homes.

Wear warm clothes and sun protection, carry water and take your time at this height. Support local families by buying tea or handicrafts, and leave no litter.
