The short answer
As a rough guide, Kathmandu to Pokhara takes about six to seven hours by road, covering roughly 200 kilometres, or about half an hour by air. From Pokhara, the flight to Jomsom is short, usually under half an hour, and the jeep from Jomsom to Ranipauwa, the village below the temple, takes an hour or two depending on road and traffic. The last stretch to the temple is a short walk or a horse ride.
By road all the way, Pokhara to Jomsom is a long, rough day of eight to ten hours or more, so most plans use a night in Jomsom or Marpha. A helicopter from Kathmandu takes around an hour and a half each way, and from Pokhara roughly 45 minutes, with a landing near the temple when weather permits. Add buffer days for flights and landslides.

How the journey fits together
Most journeys pass through Pokhara, then continue to Jomsom by a short flight or a long road journey, and finish with a jeep to Ranipauwa. Helicopter options skip some or all of these legs and fit travellers with limited time or health concerns.
Flights depend on weather and wind, which usually allow morning departures. A spare day on either side of the Muktinath visit makes the plan much safer.
Choosing a route
Choose the flight if you want to save time and avoid long, rough road sections. Choose the road if you want to see the Kali Gandaki valley and are comfortable with long, bumpy days. Choose a helicopter for speed, comfort or fitness reasons.
Ask your operator which mix suits your group, what the backup plan is for weather, and how they handle delays. Do not book an international connection right after your return.
Insider tip
Fly Pokhara to Jomsom early; mountain flights run in the morning before the wind rises.
Avoid this
Do not book a same-day international connection after a Muktinath trip.
