Why Marpha repays a stop

The village is famous for apples and apple products such as juice, dried fruit and brandy. Its stone-paved lanes are kept clean, the houses are whitewashed with flat roofs, and there is a monastery above the village. Thakali food is a highlight.

Lodges are comfortable by mountain standards, and the altitude is lower than Muktinath, which makes it a gentler place to sleep.

What to try and buy

Try apple pie, hot apple cider and a Thakali set meal. Buy dried apples, jam or local woollens as gifts. Ask before you take photos, and be careful with alcohol at altitude.

Insider tip
