The short answer
Jomsom is the main town of Mustang and the usual landing point for Muktinath. It sits in a windy, dry valley, and its short airstrip makes it the doorway between green Pokhara and the high desert beyond.
Key facts
- Role
- Administrative town of Mustang
- Arrival
- Short flight from Pokhara or a long road
- Wind
- Strong by afternoon, flights run early
- Onward
- Jeeps to Kagbeni and Muktinath
How it works
- Land in the morningFlights from Pokhara take about 20 to 25 minutes and run early, before the Kali Gandaki wind builds. Afternoon flights are rare.
- Take an acclimatisation walkJomsom sits near 2,700 m. A slow stroll by the river and a night here makes Muktinath easier.
- Plan the jeep to MuktinathThe road north passes Kagbeni and takes a few hours. Leave early, so you reach the temple in daylight and before the wind.
What Jomsom is like
Jomsom is a long, narrow town along the Kali Gandaki, known for strong afternoon winds that blow up the valley. Mornings are usually calm, which is why flights land early. The main street has lodges, bakeries, shops, a bank, a small museum and army and police posts.
For pilgrims the town is a transit point: you land, take a jeep to Muktinath and often return the same or next day. For travellers with a spare day, it is also a base for Kagbeni and Marpha.
Planning around the wind and the flight
Flights to Jomsom depend on weather and wind, and they stop by late morning. If you miss a flight, rebooking can take a day. Carry cash, keep a day of buffer and be flexible. See jeep or flight to Muktinath.
Insider tip
Treat Jomsom as a base, not a destination. Rest, eat well and acclimatise before heading higher.
Avoid this
Do not plan an afternoon flight. Winds close the airstrip most days.
Related questions
Is Jomsom good for a longer stay?
It is a practical base. Marpha and Kagbeni are prettier, and many pilgrims split their nights.
What if the flight is cancelled?
A jeep from Pokhara or Beni is the fallback, but it takes the best part of a day or more.
