The short answer
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are generally best, with clearer skies and steadier flights. Winter is very cold, and monsoon affects roads lower down.
Key facts
- Spring
- Mar to May
- Autumn
- Sep to Nov
- Winter
- Cold, snow possible
- Monsoon
- Rain shadow, but road and flight issues
How it works
- March to MayClear skies and moderate temperatures. Spring blossoms colour the lower valley.
- September to NovemberCrisp air and the best mountain views. It is the most popular period.
- June to AugustRain shadow keeps Mustang drier, but roads and flights lower down can be disrupted.
Spring and autumn in detail
In spring, days are bright, and winds pick up in the afternoons. In autumn, skies are clear and the temperature is comfortable, with colder nights. Both seasons support flights better than winter or monsoon.
Monsoon rains fall mostly lower in the valley, but landslides can affect roads and flights.
Winter and monsoon
Winter is very cold, and some lodges close. Monsoon can disrupt travel to Jomsom, though Muktinath itself lies in a rain shadow. If you must travel in these months, keep spare days and flexible bookings.
Insider tip
Muktinath sits in a rain shadow, so it is drier than most of Nepal in summer.
Avoid this
Do not forget that nights are cold in every season.
