Is Kathmandu safe for tourists?

The short answer

Yes, in the ordinary way for a big South Asian capital. The everyday things to plan for are crowded lanes, traffic and dust, so keep your bag zipped and in front of you.

Key facts

Everyday care
Crowds, traffic and dust
Water
Bottled or filtered only
Dust
Bring a light mask in dry months
After dark
Use a registered taxi or a pre-arranged ride

How it works

  1. Guard your phone and walletCrowded markets and festivals attract pickpockets. Carry only what you need.
  2. Use registered taxis or pre-booked rides at nightAvoid hailing unmarked cars in dark streets.
  3. Drink safe waterBottled or filtered only, and be careful with raw salads.

Everyday precautions that matter

Keep your bag zipped and in front of you in crowded lanes and on buses. Use ATMs inside banks or hotels rather than street machines, carry a photocopy of your passport, and keep a second card separate. If someone offers a service you did not ask for, a short "no thank you" and walking on is enough.

Traffic is the biggest daily risk. Cross roads slowly and predictably, and avoid walking on narrow roads after dark. Motorbike hire is best avoided unless you are experienced with local driving conditions.

Health and comfort

Stick to bottled or filtered water, choose busy places for street food and carry hand sanitiser. In the dry season a light mask or scarf eases dust. If you feel unwell, contact your hotel for a clinic and keep your insurance details handy. See travel insurance for Nepal.

Women travelling alone generally find Kathmandu manageable with normal city sense: dress modestly, avoid empty lanes late at night and use pre-arranged transport after dark.

Insider tip

Take the same care you would in Delhi or Bangkok, then relax. Nepali hospitality is real, and most conversations are just curiosity.

Avoid this

Do not wander into unlit side lanes late at night with a phone in hand.
