What is Kaathe Swoyambhu in Thamel?

By Base Camp Tours, licensed Nepal travel agency (Tourism License 3121/080) · Updated · 1 min read

The short answer

Kaathe Swoyambhu, also called Shree Ghah Chaitya, is a small stupa hidden in the old Thahiti area close to Thamel. Local tradition describes it as a miniature of Swayambhunath, built long ago and still honoured by Newar and Tibetan Buddhists. It is surrounded by prayer flags and small chaityas.

It takes ten to fifteen minutes and is a nice quiet stop between shops and cafes. Walk clockwise, speak softly and do not touch the offerings.

  2. Circle clockwiseRespect the custom.

A small stupa with a story

This little stupa sits in a quiet courtyard just off the busy lanes of Thamel. Local tradition links it with Swayambhunath, and Newar and Tibetan Buddhists visit to pray and circle it. Small votive shrines, prayer flags and butter lamps give it a calm atmosphere.

Because it is tucked away, it offers a moment of stillness close to the noise of Thamel, and shows how living tradition survives in the middle of a tourist district.

How to visit respectfully

Walk clockwise around the stupa, keep your voice low, and avoid blocking those who are praying. Photography is usually fine from a respectful distance, but ask before pointing a camera at people.

The visit takes about fifteen minutes, so pair it with the Garden of Dreams or a coffee. Dress modestly, and leave a small offering if you wish.

Insider tip

Combine with a short walk to Garden of Dreams.

Avoid this

Do not treat it as a photo set; people pray here.
