The short answer
Karnali is the large, remote north-west of Nepal, stretching from the low valley around Surkhet to high Himalayan districts such as Dolpo, Mugu and Humla. It is home to Rara, the largest lake in Nepal, and Phoksundo, often called the deepest. It also holds ruins of the old Khasa kingdom and sacred sites that connect the Buddhist world of Lumbini with the pilgrimage to Kailash.
Few tourists come here, so the experience is quiet and wild rather than polished. Facilities are simple, distances are long and weather can interrupt flights, so plan with extra days. It suits experienced travellers, trekkers and pilgrims who want a different side of Nepal.
