Season by season
The yatra season runs from about May to September. Early season is colder with snow patches, midsummer is the warmest and busiest, and September cools down again. Saga Dawa in the Tibetan calendar brings many pilgrims and festival crowds.
The monsoon affects the Nepal side, so roads and flights can be disrupted in July and August.
Choosing your month
Choose May or September for fewer people and colder weather, June to August for warmer days. Book early because permits and group seats are limited. See how to book.
Insider tip
Even in summer, nights freeze.
