The short answer
Nepali is the national language and the common language between communities, and Nepal has many other local languages, including Newari, Maithili, Tamang, Sherpa and Gurung. In Kathmandu, Pokhara and other tourist areas, many people in hotels, shops, restaurants and tour offices speak English.
Hindi is widely understood, which helps travellers from India. In villages and on some trekking routes, English is limited, so a guide helps with communication. A few Nepali words, such as namaste and dhanyabad, are always appreciated.
