The short answer
Nepal is famous first for height. It holds eight of the world's fourteen peaks above 8,000 metres, including Everest, and the country is the starting point for most of the world's best-known trekking. It is also famous as the birthplace of the Buddha at Lumbini, which gives the country a second identity as a centre of Buddhist pilgrimage.
Beyond that, Nepal is known for its living Hindu and Buddhist temples, the carved Newar towns of the Kathmandu Valley, rhino and tiger jungles in the Terai, the Gurkha soldier tradition, momo dumplings and dal bhat, and a calendar crowded with festivals. The reputation for friendly, unhurried hospitality is part of why people return.
