The short answer
The largest and most visited cities are Kathmandu, Pokhara, Lalitpur (Patan) and Bhaktapur, with Biratnagar, Birgunj, Bharatpur (Chitwan), Butwal, Bhairahawa, Nepalgunj, Janakpur, Dhangadhi and Itahari serving as big commercial and border towns in the plains. Smaller hill towns such as Dhulikhel, Bandipur, Tansen, Gorkha, Ilam and Dhankuta are the ones that travellers actually enjoy slowing down in.
For a visitor, Kathmandu is the arrival gate, Pokhara is the rest city, and the Terai towns are mostly transit points except Lumbini, Janakpur and the jungle gateways. Use the plains cities as stepping stones, not destinations, unless you are on pilgrimage.
