What affects the cost of an Everest region trip?

By Base Camp Tours, licensed Nepal travel agency (Tourism License 3121/080) · Updated · 1 min read

The short answer

Flights (or helicopters), permits, guide and porter support, the number of nights in the mountains and the season. A short helicopter day costs a fraction of a two-week trek, but costs vary widely by operator and dates.

Where the money goes

A trek usually includes domestic flights, permits, guide, porter, lodges, meals and ground transfers. A helicopter day removes the walking days, but the aircraft itself is the main cost. Season and group size affect both.

To compare quotes fairly, check the number of nights, how many meals are included, who pays for permits and whether the flight to Lukla is included.

Questions to ask

Ask what happens if the flight is delayed, whether spare days are built in, what the guide-to-trekker ratio is and which insurance is required. A price that looks low often leaves out items you will pay for later.

See cost by traveller for general guidance.

Insider tip

Ask for the price to be broken into permits, transport, guide and accommodation so you can compare like with like.

Avoid this

Do not choose the lowest quote without checking what is left out; permit fees and domestic flights are often extra.
