The short answer
October to November and March to May. Autumn gives the clearest skies and the biggest crowds; spring is warmer, with rhododendrons in bloom and slightly more haze.
Key facts
- Oct to Nov
- Clearest, busiest
- Mar to May
- Warm, floral, hazier
- Dec to Feb
- Cold, quiet, snow possible
- Jun to Sep
- Rain, flight cancellations
What each window is like
October and November have crisp air, dry trails and clear mornings, but the trail and lodges are crowded, and nights are cold. March to May is warmer, the lower valleys bloom with rhododendron, and cloud builds in the afternoons. December to February is cold and quiet with excellent clarity on some days, but high lodges can close and snow can block routes.
The monsoon brings cloud, rain and flight disruption, which is why very few trekkers go then.
How to choose your slot
If you want the best chance of clear views and can handle the crowds, go in October. If you want flowers and warmer days, choose April. If you prefer quiet trails and are comfortable with cold, consider early December or late February.
Book flights and lodges early for peak months, and keep a spare day for weather.
Insider tip
May is also the main summit season, so the lower valleys feel busy with expedition teams and porters.
Avoid this
Do not plan the Khumbu in monsoon unless you are comfortable with cancelled flights and slippery trails.
