How do I bargain and check authenticity?

The short answer

In small shops bargaining is normal: start with a friendly offer around half to two thirds of the first price and settle where both smile. Fixed-price shops and cooperatives do not bargain. Always compare two or three shops before buying anything valuable.

To check authenticity, ask who made the item, look for hand-finish irregularities, test bowls for a clear ringing sound, check pashmina labels for fibre content and ask for a receipt. Be careful with any claim of antiquity or rare stones.
