The short answer
On narrow mountain trails, animals and loaded porters have priority. Always step aside for porters carrying heavy loads, and for mules, donkeys and yaks. When animals approach, move to the uphill side of the trail, not the cliff edge, and wait until they pass. Standing on the downhill side can mean being pushed off the path.
Trekkers walking uphill generally have priority over those coming down. Keep your trekking poles tucked in near animals and near other people, walk on the left of prayer walls and stupas, say a friendly namaste to everyone you meet, and carry out your rubbish. On crowded peak-season trails these habits keep everyone safe and in good humour.

Sharing narrow trails
Porters and animals carry heavy loads and cannot easily stop or step aside. Give them space and let them pass. Stand on the uphill side of the trail, away from the drop, and wait until the animals have gone.
Listen for bells and calls. A yak or mule train moves slowly, but it can push past if startled.
Courtesy that adds up
Greet people you meet, step aside for faster walkers and keep your voice down in villages. Take your rubbish with you and do not feed animals.
Treat porters with respect, share trail news and check that they have suitable gear and rest. A friendly trail is a safer trail.
Insider tip
Pause and let a yak train pass; it is slow and safe.
Avoid this
Do not stand on the cliff side when animals are approaching.
