The short answer
Do keep your bag in front of you or on your lap, take a seat early on long journeys, and carry water, tissues and a light layer. Do ask your hotel which bus or vehicle is best for the route. Local buses are cheap and colourful, but crowded, and journeys are slow.
Don't put valuables in an overhead rack or leave them on a seat when you step out. Avoid travelling at night on mountain roads unless your operator advises it. Keep your ticket and your destination in mind, and ask the conductor if you are unsure. For comfort, many visitors prefer a tourist bus or a private vehicle.
