More Do and Don't, and What to Wear · Dos and don'ts

What are the dos and don'ts when staying in a Nepali home or homestay?

The short answer

Do greet your hosts with namaste, remove your shoes at the door, accept tea or food with your right hand and eat what you are given in modest amounts. Do ask before photographing the family or entering the kitchen or prayer corner, and offer to help in small ways.

Don't point your feet at people or the household shrine, step over food or cooking items, or touch food with your left hand when sharing. Keep voices calm, dress modestly, and thank your hosts warmly at the end. A small gift from your home town is a kind gesture.
