The short answer
Siliguri is the gateway for Darjeeling, Sikkim and North Bengal. Buses run to the Kakarbhitta border in about an hour, after which long-distance buses continue on the East-West Highway and then to Kathmandu. The whole journey is long, commonly around fourteen to eighteen hours, so many travellers prefer an overnight ride or a flight from Bagdogra to Kathmandu.
Take New Jalpaiguri (NJP) as the rail hub if you arrive by train, then a shared or private car to Kakarbhitta. Allow time for immigration, then board a bus to Kathmandu.
