The short answer
From Kolkata the common overland routes are a train to New Jalpaiguri (NJP) for the Kakarbhitta border, or a train to Raxaul or Jaynagar for the central route. Kakarbhitta is a long bus ride from Kathmandu, while Raxaul is closer. Flights from Kolkata to Kathmandu are also frequent and save a lot of time.
Overland suits people who want to see Terai towns or tea country on the way. Plan an extra day for the journey.
