The short answer
Rivers swell in monsoon and shrink in winter, so rafting is best in the post-monsoon and spring windows. Lakes such as Phewa, Begnas and Rupa change colour with the sky and are clearest in autumn. High lakes like Gosaikunda, Tilicho and Gokyo are accessible only in warm months and partly freeze in winter.
Seasonal ponds and wetlands in the Terai fill in summer and dry in winter, drawing different birds each season.
