The short answer
Machhapuchhre, meaning fishtail, rises to about 6,990 metres above Pokhara and is considered sacred to local people. Climbing to its summit is not permitted, which keeps its sharp profile untouched. It dominates Pokhara's skyline from Sarangkot and the lakeside.
You can trek to its base camp as part of the Annapurna Sanctuary route, but not onto the summit. Mardi Himal gives a closer ridge view.
