The short answer
Lumbini is the birthplace, but the Buddha's story continues in a ring of ancient sites in the surrounding district, often called the Lumbini circuit. Archaeologists count dozens of sites outside the main garden. The best known are Tilaurakot (the ancient Shakya capital), Kudan, Gotihawa, Niglihawa, Sagarhawa, Araurakot, Devdaha and Ramagrama.
Most are quiet brick mounds, ponds and Ashokan pillar remains in farmland, so they reward people who like history and walking more than monuments. Plan a full day with a car and driver and a guide who can explain what each mound was. Start from Lumbini or Bhairahawa, and take water and a hat since shade is limited.
