The short answer
Janakpur is known for its many sacred ponds, called sagar, sar or kunda. Local tradition counts well over a hundred, and a popular verse praises the city for its temples and its seventy-odd ponds of mythological importance. The ponds are tied to stories of Sita, Rama and King Janak, and pilgrims bathe in them as part of the visit.
The best known are Ganga Sagar, said never to have dried up, and Dhanush Sagar beside the Ram Mandir, said to be shaped like the bow of Shiva. Others include Ratna Sagar, Agni Kunda and Bihar Kunda. The stories differ from place to place, so treat them as local belief and ask a priest or guide to tell you the version they use.
