Two Sherpa villages above Namche

Khumjung and Khunde sit in a high bowl with stone walls, potato fields and views of Ama Dablam and Thamserku. Khumjung has a well-known school and a monastery, while Khunde has a hospital serving the region.

A walk here is a popular acclimatisation day from Namche, giving a chance to see village life away from the main trail.

Visiting respectfully

Ask before entering monasteries and photographing people. Dress modestly, walk clockwise around mani walls and leave donations only if you wish.

Take water, a hat and a warm layer. The walk is high enough that you should go slowly.

Insider tip

Walk up on your Namche rest day and sleep back in Namche to acclimatise.

Avoid this

Do not climb too fast on the steep trail above Namche.
