The short answer

A practical order is Pashupatinath, then Muktinath, then Ridi, then Barahachhetra, because it follows a loop from Kathmandu to the Kali Gandaki, down to the lowlands and then east. Many pilgrims choose their own order by season and flights.

Key facts

Start
Pashupatinath, Kathmandu
Then
Muktinath
Then
Ridi, Gulmi
End
Barahachhetra, Sunsari

How it works

  1. Start at PashupatinathThe temple is open to Hindus; allow a morning, including the evening aarati at the ghats if you can.
  2. Go to Muktinath nextFly to Pokhara, then to Jomsom, or drive; plan for altitude of about 3,800 m.
  3. Continue to RidiRidi lies on the Kali Gandaki at the junction with the Ridi Khola; it is reached from Tansen or Butwal.
  4. Finish in the eastBarahachhetra is in Sunsari near Dharan and Itahari, on the Koshi river.
  5. Add rest daysPilgrimage days are long; a spare day in Pokhara or Kathmandu is wise.

Insider tip

Fly into Pokhara for Muktinath and into Biratnagar for Barahachhetra to save long road days.

Avoid this

Do not squeeze all four into a week unless you accept very long days.
